S1E3 40-Day Water Fast & Post-Fast ReFeed Journal

Day 20 of 40-Day Water Fast

Highlights:

  1. Day 20 complete. 480 hours done. Halfway to Goal! Yay!
  2. Weight Loss: 2lbs Back on the Weight Loss Train! Total this Fast: 31lbs (9lbs water weight - 22lbs fat)
  3. Blood sugar: 78
  4. Exercise: 1.2 mile walk

Lessons Learned at Halfway Point:

  1. Hunger is NOT the issue at this point. Detoxification is. Since I began on August 9th earlier this year I’ve now lost 65lbs. What this means I’ve lost the fat from all over my body and I’m essentially down to the belly fat. I haven’t weighed this low since my early 30s. So now I’m burning fat I’ve carried for decades.
  2. The last several days my Keto Breath has gotten so bad that a couple times I’ve woken in the middle of the night wanting to puke from it. Also I’m urinating a lot. Combine this with that yesterday I was so weak I had to take several breaks on my daily walk and spend the day in bed adds up to one thing. My body is finally getting rid of all the old toxins stored in the fat I’m burning. Since my last bowel movement was 10 days ago there’s only 2 ways for the toxins to get expelled from the body: breath and urine.
  3. Therefore, during the remaining 20 days I have to make sure I stay hydrated and keep my mouth sanitary. By the end I’ll probably have the whitest teeth and cleanest mouth in my city! LOL
  4. Finally, detoxification also means temporary flare ups of arthritic conditions. My left foot was stiff when I started on my daily walk. Wanted to give up but stuck with it; albeit at a slower pace. 3/4 of the way on the 1st half the foot loosened up and I was fine.

Yes. I have it as part of a YouTube playlist of Fasting documentaries. I have 3 others on there. Here’s the link in case you are interested:

Keep it up - you can do 20, you can do 40!

Thanks for the links. I’m aware of them, but have only watched the first two. The guy in the second one dropped a helluva lot of weight, but has subsequently put it back on, and then some. Shame. A lesson on the utter importance of changing you ways after the fast, and never going back to the old ways of eating.

Yes. I agree. I already have my “maintenance” plan ready to go when I achieve my goal of reversing ALL my medical conditions and eliminating ALL of my medications. How are you doing?

Day 21 of 40-day Water Fast

  1. Day 21 complete. 504 hours done. 18 days to go!
  2. Weight loss: 1lb. Total this Fast: 32lbs (9lbs water weight - 23lbs fat)
  3. Blood sugar: 76
  4. Exercise: 1.8 mile walk
  5. Blood Pressure: 142/90

Notes:

  1. Detoxification is the BIGGEST challenge so far during my journey to reverse my T2 Diabetes. I was woken from a deep sleep due to having to rinse my mouth out with Listerine because of the toxic taste in my mouth. Yuck. Also I just felt nauseous all day in the stomach as my body was processing all the crap left behind from the fat burned up for energy.
  2. Luckily I work from home so I was able to take breaks before I hit the work load again.
  3. Blood pressure was disappointing I was hoping to maintain the downward trend from a week ago so I could get off the hypertension meds. Guess will have to see what next week’s readings are.
  4. One nice thing is I’m able to lie on my stomach in bed again. However, its been so long my breast bone and ribs are sensitive to the pressure so I have to put my arms under my upper chest. Guess I have to work up to it. LOL

Day 22 of 40-Day Water Fast

Highlights:

  1. Day 22 complete. 528 hours done. 18 more days to go!
  2. Weight loss: 0. Another weight plateau. I attribute this one to all the detox going on.
  3. Blood sugar: 79
  4. Exercise: 1 mile walk

Notes:

  1. Appears I’ve gotten past the worst of this detox bout. Had a good uninterrupted sleep. However, I felt the after effects of the detox as my aerobic endurance wasn’t as robust. Had to struggle to finish the walk without stopping. Also the left foot was a bit stiff starting up and started to feel sore at the end.
  2. Energy better today than yesterday. Able to get more work done. However, the detox is have an impact on the kidneys as they’re having to work at getting this crap out of my body. Lower back was sore yesterday and today. Now that I’ve gotten past the worst of this bout of detox hopefully will feel better tomorrow.

Day 23 of 40-Day Water Fast

Highlights:

  1. Day 23 complete. 552 hours done. 17 more days to go!
  2. Weight loss: 1lb. Total this fast: 33lbs (9lbs water weight - 24lbs fat)
  3. Blood sugar: 77
  4. Exercise: 1.8 miles

Notes:

  1. Still detoxing. Walking was a struggle this morning. Had to take 2 breaks. I stuck with it because I knew the physical activity would speed up the process of getting these toxins out of my body. Kidneys not hurting as bad as they did yesterday but I can still feel them working hard. My plan of drinking additional water to help them flush out the crap appears to be working.
  2. Hope I have more energy back tomorrow. I’m giving a speech titled “When is More Important than What” about When we eat is appearing to be more important than What we eat when it comes to gaining and losing weight. I’ll also review the various daily time restricted eating protocols people can choose or mix and match to fit their schedules.

Day 24 of 40-Day Water Fast

Highlights:

  1. Day 24 complete. 576 hours done. 16 more days to go!
  2. Weight Loss: .6lbs. Total this fast: 33.6lbs (9lbs water weight - 24.6lbs fat)
  3. Blood sugar: 91
  4. Exercise: 1.2 miles

Notes:

  1. Appears this bout of detox is over. Kidneys no longer hurt. Also I’m back to regular Keto breath and not getting that toxic aftertaste in my mouth anymore. Sill a bit drained from the experience. But at least on the walk back and forth from my Toastmasters club I didn’t need to take any breaks.
  2. The speech went well. So did the the 3-minute Q&A session I held afterwards. On the evaluation I learned I needed to spend a little more time differentiating between the different daily fasting protocols: Circadian Rhythm 12:12, 18:6, 20:4 and OMAD. I talked about the role of insulin signaling the body which of 2 states to be in: energy storage or using those energy stores. How our Circadian Rhythms make our bodies more insulin receptive in the morning and why you should not eat anything 2 hours before sleep because of the rise of the hormone Melatonin preparing the body for sleep and signaling the pancreas to stop production of insulin. My next speech will focus on the different weekly fasting protocols: 5:2, Alternate Day Fasting (ADF), Fast Mimicking and Prolonged Fasts.

Well done for reaching 24. That’s not nothing! Do you feel any urge to stop at all, or has that all fallen by the wayside?

No. Not since I’m past the halfway point now. Had a dream last night where I broke my fast and I felt so guilty I woke up! LOL
I’m at the point now I’m finally burning off the dreaded belly fat. It’s so satisfying that it offsets any lingering hunger pains I get.

Day 25 of 40-Day Water Fast

Highlights:

  1. Day 25 complete. 600 hours done. 15 more days to go!
  2. Weight Loss: 1lb. Total this fast: 34.6lbs (9lbs water weight - 25.6lbs fat)
  3. Blood sugar: 74. - Guess yesterday was a temporary spike.
  4. Exercise: 1.2 miles walk

Notes:

  1. Still not fully recovered from the detox episode. Got winded on the walk back and had to resort to the old Jedi mind trick of counting steps to finish.
  2. Tried on a pair of jeans that I thought I’d wear to a party tomorrow. Nope. Waaay too big on me now. LOL. Guess I’ll have to wear dress pants as they have braces so they can be really loose and I can still wear them.

Day 26 of 40-Day Water Fast.

Highlights:

  1. Day 26 complete. 624 hours done. 14 more days to go!
  2. Weight loss: 1lb. Total this fast: 35.6lbs (9lbs water weight - 26.6lbs fat)
  3. Blood sugar: 84
  4. Exercise: 1 mile (.5 carrying a 12lb backpack of groceries)

Notes:

  1. From here on out I’m expecting to grind it out. Had the longest sleep I’ve had in a while, 5 hours. In spite of that I was groggy on my morning walk and had to take several breaks. However, the morning sun on my face was refreshing and makes me glad I live is Southern California as it was in the high 60s when I took my walk.
  2. Maybe it was just today, but I expected my aerobic energy to bounce back since its been a couple days since the detox session. Nope. But I’m determined and I WILL see it through.
  3. Will test my resolve tonight. Have a party I committed to bringing my famous nachos to. I’m also going to perform an annual holiday story I do every year called “A Storyweave for Christmas”

Day 27 of 40-Day Water Fast

Highlights:

  1. Day 27 complete. 648 hours done. 13 more days to go!
  2. Weight loss: 3lbs. Total this fast: 38.6lbs (9lbs water weight - 29.6lbs fat)
  3. Blood sugar: 72
  4. Exercise: 1 mile walk

Notes:

  1. Aerobic endurance still not back to pre-detox levels. Making nachos yesterday and being at the party was tiring. Couldn’t stand very long. However, I managed to have good energy giving my story performance. Also, it was requested I repeat my presentation “WHEN is more important than WHAT” at the party for those Toastmaster club members who weren’t able to attend the meeting and for interested spouses at the party. With the repeat performance I was able to incorporate the suggestions I was given from the 1st time to make it better. It was well received.
  2. During my morning walk I took several breaks to conserve my energy avoiding the “Macho Man” trap of toughing it out and staying focused on the end goal. Completion of the 40-day and making sure I do my daily walks till the end.
  3. The 3lb weight loss was a pleasant surprise. Haven’t lost that much in a single day since the beginning when I lost water weight. Attribute that to the effort of making my nachos (which were a BIG hit btw) and doing the 2 presentations.

Well done - it sounds so much more when you put the hours in! Almost done!

Thank you. Appreciate the recognition!

Day 28 of 40-Day Water Fast

Highlights:

  1. Day 28 complete. 672 hours done. 12 more days to go!
  2. Weight gain: 2lbs. (See Notes)
  3. Blood sugar: 74
  4. Exercise: 1 mile walk

Notes:

  1. Gained 2lbs. Guess I celebrated too early yesterday. I think I was exhausted yesterday from dehydration from all the activity the day before including lugging the 12lb backpack of groceries a half-mile home. Oh well, I know it’s all water weight. The important thing is I did lose an additional pound of fat overall which is in keeping with the general trend of losing a pound a day.
  2. Aerobic endurance is coming back. Did not take a single break on the 1 mile walk. Pace is not back up to what it was originally but I can live with that.
  3. I’ll be so glad when this is over due to the annoyance of the ever present “keto breath”. I’ve never used so much mouthwash and toothpaste in such a limited time as now. LOL

Blows my mind that one can gain “weight” while fasting. That would really discourage me, but you’re taking it all in stride. Good for you!
