I’m curious about what’s going on with my glucose levels. this is my 12th day of fasting and my glucose levels are going up. On my 5th day they were lower than ever (54 mg/dl) and my ketones were soaring in the 5’s. My glucose however, have continued to creep up (last night it was in the 70’s today it’s in the low 80’s) while my ketones continue to rise. Does anyone have any insight in to what this means?
Glucose Monitoring while Fasting
I’m not sure but it could mean that your body is converting the glycerin of your fat stores (one fat molecule consists of three fatty acids and one glycerin) into glucose so that would be a good thing. Another possible thing is that your body is converting protein (amino acids) into glucose. This process is called gluconeogenesis. Do you have much body fat? Because your body is more like to use your protein stores (so your muscle mass) for energy if you don’t have enough body fat. This could be dangerous because your heart is also a muscle and you definitely don’t want your body to break down your heart muscle into energy.
But if you have enough fat stores I think your higher glucose levels are the result of your body using your fat stores as energy (glycerin glucose).
