Fasting Kate's Daily Weigher Journal

I’m starting another fast and want to log my progress. I’ve completed several extended fasts, one 30 day fast, some 14 day fasts, and many shorter ones - mostly 3 day fasts on consecutive weeks. I made many health gains and lost a lot of weight, but I took the last year and a half off due to the pandemic. I have not regained weight, other than what you might expect after coming off of a long fast. I lost more weight during the pandemic by dieting, but I have some more health problems that had reversed that are coming back, so I want to do this to knock those symptoms down and get my A1c/average blood sugar lower. It is time to get back to this to improve my health. I want to lose about 50 to 60 more pounds.

I think I was dehydrated 7/18, so I took salt yesterday. Oddly, I have seen my weight go up at the start off a fast before, doing this same thing.

I am waiting to see my glucose drop, then will measure ketones on strips.

Oddly, I am experiencing no hunger at all this time. I am 40 hours in at this point. The first time I tried a 30 day fast, I struggled somewhat in the first couple of days, and the end of day 3 was really hard. That would be tomorrow, if it happens. Possibly my medications are blunting hunger, not sure, or maybe clean eating has given me little to “withdraw” from.

So far, so good.

glucose 78 ketones moderate (yesterday’s glucose 89)

Today I woke up very tired, I’m finally starting to feel alive. I have been fasting about 15 minutes shy of 62 hours now. I was not expecting to have a hard morning. I hope tonight isn’t terrible - the first time I tried to get past day three was really hard. We’ll see. So far it has been easier than the first time I fasted, and I have been worried that this will be hard since it has been a long time.

I have hit ketosis now. I usually see my blood sugar drop on day three, so I don’t bother testing ketones until I see the drop so I don’t waste strips.

If this goes like last time, I’ll see a drop around day 5 or 6. It is frustrating!

I have a lot of work to do today.

I did not get any sleep and so decided I needed to break my fast yesterday. I’m mulling over starting again today for an extended fast. I’ve been fasting about 13 1/2 hours so far.

I made it. I am fasting again - it has been 37 hours according to my Zero app. I feel really good today, slept well. I just can’t fast on no sleep-

So, there it is finally. Started 7/17 at 199, had one day of eating in there after a sleepless night (decided to eat for a day and resume the fast), popped up to 201, = and now 195. So, basically 5 and 1/2 days of fasting with one day of eating in there. This happened to me last time I did a fast, where I really did not see anything significant until day 5. It is Saturday today, and I did not sleep in. it’s 7 a.m., so it is my typical weigh in time. Yet, I wonder if I’m dehydrated. Who knows.

I would love to see 175 pounds. That is a lot to ask of myself. I haven’t seen that weight except once for like five minutes on a starvation diet where it did not stick, when I was in my 20s. Yet, I want that, and more. I’m tall, but not large framed. I would do myself a favor to get into the 150s for sure. These seem like pipe dreams. I’ve been over 300 pounds in my life - also a long time ago, but there’s that. I’m not sure what I weighed exactly, but once I realized I was over 300, I refused to get on the doctor’s scale.

I’ll just focus on 175 for now.

I summarized a youtube talk I had bookmarked to watch again. It was really long - I’m tired from taking notes. I stopped where he started talking about True North Center. I really just wanted to get the notes about the benefits of fasting.

This is the craziness with the weighing. So I broke the fast and ate yesterday, and I’m down more this morning. I weighed in at the usual time. I often stay the same or even go up when fasting. I just have to ignore it, yet I want to weigh in daily as it helps me stay immersed.

I’m happy with this result.

I have one of the busiest weeks of the year coming up, and here I am today having to work on a Sunday because I am behind and also because something unusual is happening today work-related that I have to monitor. Not the best week for fasting, but honestly I already know that stuff will continuously come up. That’s just life. There is always something stressful that is going to happen, there is always some celebration or food showing up for some reason that I didn’t ask for.

That’s just how it is. I will cut myself slack this week if I need to though.

I have not decided on any particular fasting schedule. I just want to fold it into my life to get some weight off as I can work it in. I’m happy with that thought.

I’m fascinated by some of the fasting information Ray Cronise has put out. I’ve watched some youtube videos and just found his podcast. The podcast did not have details of how he helped some man lose 140 pounds. That is disappointing. He wants people to learn it methodically rather than through social media. Well, whatever, I guess he wants to pick up clients. The podcast has been dormant for a long time, though, it would be nice to have some information.

I’ve heard conflicting information about exercising or not exercising during a fast. He says not to exercise because your body is not in “build” mode and working out tears down the muscles and will result in loss of lean mass. He says it is not the fasting that causes the loss in lean mass, it’s the working out during the extended fast that causes the loss since your body isn’t in “go go grow” mode. Interesting.

Interesting that I had two days of eating and didn’t gain weight. Or so it seems so far. Weighing is always crazy.

I did not have much of an appetite on Saturday. Sunday I was more hungry and ate more, so I expected my weight to be up more today, but it really isn’t up much. I didn’t have a lot of carbs, so that helped.

Restarting the fast today. I need to look over my fasting benefits notes to get myself into it. Busy day.

I love the tip from the Fung program - hunger does not build and build and build - hunger comes in waves. It tends to come during times you would usually eat, and then - it goes away. That tip is awesome.

7/27 196 23 hour fast yesterday

I forgot to weigh first thing this morning, distracted by something, so it isn’t a comparable weight, but I don’t think it will be much different.

I have a presentation today - I haven’t decided if I will fast. Today and tomorrow are my two most stressful days of this month. Next month I have several days off, so that could be just as much trouble.

There is always something going on.

I picked up on a great tip today from Megan Ramos on an interview. Mindset is important. Fasting is not about deprivation and indulging. It is about healing and building. You don’t want to go through a healing phase of a fast only to indulge in junk food when you come out of it - you want to build a better body. It’s all about the mindset.

Interesting again - I have to say, though, that my appetite is down, so the past few days have not involved much food. I always say there seems to be some delay between when I fast and when I let go of the weight. No different this time! LOL-

I so want to break into the 180s.

7/29 192 no fast yesterday
7/30 192, fasted yesterday, still fasting - 35 hours per Zero app

Ha - exactly the same as yesterday. The scale isn’t going to psych me out. It’s the trend that counts. I can’t wait to break into the 180s. Looks like it is going to be August for this to happen.

I don’t expect this to be rapid, given that I have already lost well over 100 pounds. I don’t really want to say the number since it might identify me somehow. I guess that is silly, I don’t know who would be that interested in me. I have felt like a non-person much of my life - no one really cares if you even make progress on weight loss if they still see you as “fat.” You’re still not worthy. At this point, I’m being treated pretty civil by people. I’m so tall the overweight doesn’t show so much, and people these days are generally overweight, so I just blend now.

Anyway, interesting that Ray Cronise expects people can lose down to their ideal body weight regardless of how large they’ve been or even if they weren’t at their ideal even when they were in high school (I’ve never been a normal body weight - my first memory of hearing I was fat was when I was 4 years old from other kids pointing at me in my swimsuit). If I actually get down to a true, ideal bodyweight, I would be claiming a loss of something like 180 pounds. I cannot even imagine that-

I thought I might be back to fasting today, but I need a solid day of feeling well. Yesterday, I didn’t feel well - I felt dehydrated and was dizzy when standing up too quickly. I decided to eat carbohydrates to get over it since the LMNT packets were not doing anything (they never do).

I think I do better on broth made with regular salt.

I feel better today.
