I have read somewhere that taking electrolytes might inhibit/stop autophagy. I plan to take potassium and magnesium at some point.
Since I am mainly doing the fast for cleansing, I’m not sure what quantities I should use. I don’t want to take the daily recommended amount as stated on the bottle, as it seems too much?

Any advice, is it necessary to take these electrolytes at all?

I absolutely have to take electrolytes, but I have a severe medical condition, so that is a contributing factor. If I don’t take electrolytes I am in horrible pain and eventually black out. But everyone is different and you’ll just have to experiment. It’s not really about what works for other people but what is most successful for you. Maybe electrolytes will help you extend your fast or maybe you won’t need them

I haven’t heard in any of my research that supplements inhibit autophagy- but that doesn’t mean that they don’t! That’s really interesting. Would you share your source information. The more knowledge we have the more successful our fasts will be!

Hi Kristy, thank you for the reply.

I also struggle especially in the mornings with light-headedness.

Dr. LeGrand – (Nature’s Health Clinic) (https://youtu.be/yVmTDZiukCk) mentions in his video that Pectin and Maltodextrin in supplement capsules - used as emulsifiers etc – can stop autophagy. The Magnesium tablets I have is a vegetarian capsules. I presume it is thus vegetable compound used as medium to carry the magnesium? I’m concerned these might include calories?

I have since decided to rather get magnesium salt for the bathtub  … apparently magnesium is very easily absorbed through the skin?

Also Dorian Wilson – who seems knowledgeable

I struggle to understand the processes, and wonder too if limiting electrolyte deficiency doesn’t also boost autophagy as the body then need to break down old cells to source these?

The science is extremely interesting nevertheless

Additionally, I think what I might attempt this time around is to only use the potassium and magnesium when I experience headaches?

Do you supplement phosphate or calcium? … and what other electrolytes do you use?

What a great response! I’m going to check out those links! Using Epsom salts is an awesome idea. I can’t imagine taking a couple of pills a day would have enough fillers to break autophagy but the body is a mysterious and complex creature! Yeah, science is the coolest. Vegetable stearates and cellulose can come from anything from oil/fiber from seaweed to corn (depends on the brand). The rabbit hole for figuring out which brand does which is usually fruitless.

I have prescription supplement magnesium and B2 (for my messed up brain) as well as calcium and folic acid. I also take a multivitamin because I’m vegetarian. I don’t think I’m the usual case for what an average body needs, though. I also take a ton of prescription drugs to regulate many of my systems my nervous system can’t no longer help regulate. The problem I’ve discovered is that many of these drugs are stored in my adipose tissue and when I lose weight too quickly my medication levels have to be constantly checked so we can balance everything out.

I doubt there is enough human trial research to prove either way about boosting autophagy with or without supplements. Sounds like a good experiment for you!

No matter what definitely have some NaCl. No osmosis in or out of the cell without NaCl.

I’ve realized how much easier it has become to stay on the water fast once the 1st week is done, hope it continues this way.

After reading up about all the dangers of doing the “refeed” wrong, it has now become a deterrent to breaking my fast. I can’t just have my “rise-cake and peanut-butter” – which is my favorite snack – as it could cause serious stomach ache after 8 days of fasting.

Good luck to all – we can do this!!!

hi Eddy! Great job so far. I was wondering if you did anything for your stomach? I’m on my day 6 now and I have the same problem :disappointed:

Hi Gemma. :slightly_smiling_face: Since one of my main goals is autophagy, I was apprehensive about using Apple Cider Vinegar, as that seems to be an option/cure mentioned elsewhere, but ACV might interfere with autophagy, and I thus decided against it. I instead just upped my water again, and had a pinch of Himalayan salt in a glass of water at lunch time.

We’re right about the same start date I think, Eddy. Keep it up, you’re doing great. I’ve been dealing with some foot pain so I’ve taken a break from running for about a month. I plan on buying some new shoes and trying to ramp up again. Last time I did it, I was able to run pretty far as long as I kept my heart rate under 140.

Hi Brad, I’m in awe of you and Michael. A 40 day fast - wow! You seem to breeze through it - well done so far Brad!

I tried continuing running, but my heart rate quickly ramps up to 145bpm, and I want to keep around 120bpm. Thus I will stick to cycling and swimming during the fast, and might extend my 30 minutes to 60 minutes but stay at 120bpm.
Once I start refeeding I’ll start running again, hope I don’t lose too much muscle memory

To be honest, I don’t know if you can call what I was doing “running.” I’m pretty sure my pace was about a 14-15 minute mile. :joy: I see you do triathlons. That’s something that’s on my bucket list. I just started getting into running in the last 2 years. My brothers started doing Spartan races and got me involved. I had signed up for a Trifecta (3 races of varying distances in a calendar year) but they all got canceled due to COVID. I’m hoping that losing 20 pounds will lessen/eliminate my foot pain and I can start running consistently again.

:joy: I am right there with you - I am not a prolific runner by any measure. I am a cyclist foremost, and I’ve come to love long distance open water swimming as it 's close to meditating. To me it is meditation

But I too have had many running injuries over the years and have told my partner numerous times that I feel I need to lose weight as it will lessen the pounding, and subsequent running injuries. :slightly_smiling_face:

To me running is a “violent” sport in terms of my body - all those joints taking a pounding. But I have no choice but to suffer through the last leg of a triathlon - hopefully it will feel much better after this

@eddy I couldn’t agree with you more about swimming as meditation!
