Any Tips for Refeeding and Keeping the weight off?

Hi All,

I plan on doing a 21 day fast and I realize its far away, but I wanted to start researching refeeding. There are many sources out there and not everyone is correct. But, having more info is always better.

I have done 3 long fasts in the past: 1st was 7 days, 2nd was 12 days and 3rd was 6 days. Of these I would say only the first one was a success. I was able to keep those pounds off. My biggest mistake has always been eating too much too fast and eating loads of carbs as well.

This is going to be my longest fast and I have decided to start off really slow this time, but I am a little concerned with my upcoming vacation. I can stay keto till Nov 27th, but after that it’s going to be carbs. I can probably do 12-14 intermittent fasting on some days, but it’s definitely going to be carb heavy.

Any tips for transitioning from fasting to eating keto and then from keto to carbs? I realize carbs will bring in bloating and a little weight gain. But, there must be ways to manage that lifestyle as well, right?

How many meals per day will you be consuming during your vacation? If you can keep do 1 full meal per day plus snacks during your vacation, your weight gain should be manageable even with carbs intake.

I’d recommend skipping breakfast because there is not a lot of tempting food for breakfast menu. For lunch, don’t make it a must-have during your vacation. You can have a full lunch here and there but try not to have it every day. For dinner, you can eat normally.

With this approach, you can still eat some delicious snacks in-between meals during your vacation without getting out of hand.

My suggestion is to plan to concentrate on meat and non-starchy veggies and don’t stuff yourself. Also hold off from the carbs unless you REALLY want it, and then allow yourself, but only one serving or less. Avoid sweetened drinks. Limit alcohol. Decide ahead of time what you are going to do. That’s my plan anyway. :grinning:

Good suggestion. I was planning on eating 2 meals. But I guess I could try skipping lunch on some days or may be just have proteins and avoid carbs for a meal.

Good suggestions!!! Should definitely avoid empty calories. And portion control is going to be important as well.

Will definitely keep these in mind!!

I posted this somewhere else on the forum, but I’ll post it again here:

Just found this video this morning- it’s about refeeding and staying in ketosis. It doesn’t mention going from that to a carb-heavy diet, though. I think the intermittent fasting is a great idea! I know how hard it is to maintain healthy habits on vacation, so just be mindful and you can always do a short water fast when you get back.

Thanks for the info! Easing into any diet seems to be the key.

There is a lot of conflicting information on how to break a fast. And I am not even considering folks who break their fast using candies or burgers.

I guess a lot also depends on how long you are fasting as well. I’ll post some links after I research things more.
