Welcome back!

You may want to read @Mary_Joy journal as she talks about Hashimoto’s.

Let’s take this a question at a time. What’s your #1 question you need an answer for?

Also read my Daily Journals and answers to forum member questions. You’ll learn a lot that way and get the context also.

The basics to start a 30 day water fast journey, how to prepare my body for it and should I start right away or need some precautions

#1 is you have a strong “why”.

What is the longest fast you’ve done and the one most recent?

I recommend you check out @Yasemin YouTube channel. She has a ton of videos that answer the basics. You may want to start with a smaller fast. Maybe join Yas’s current challenge group.

Yes, I have Hashimoto’s, which is an auto-immune form of Hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed in 2006, and began taking Armour thyroid in 2007. When I stopped eating meat, I changed to a generic form of T4. and T3. I stopped taking T3, because one has to take it many times throughout the day, and I could no longer get the brand I liked using (the ONLY brand that did not contain either corn starch (GMO and inflammatory for auto-immune diseases) or wheat by-products as fillers. I have fasted a lot, and it has not healed yet, my thyroid issues. BUT, I will say, I have to take a smaller dose than I use to. Whether this is due to fasting??? With this fast, I am committed to stopping all gluten products, afterwards, I have not done this, after previous fasts. I live in Germany, the land of the BEST beer and bread, sigh…I am committed now, as that is what I think I did not do in the past, and was inconsistent. How silly is it, when I research which thyroid meds do not contain gluten, but still eat bread and drink beer? I was fooling myself. I hope this helps. I will give it a go, for a year, and see if my dosis of T4 can go down even more. Hope is the last to “die”.

I have a bit of time, and am no expert, but I will try to see, out of my own experience, if I can answer your questions, OK?

  1. Are your kidneys healthy? If you are concerned, then find a doc of your choice to get your blood parameters checked before and during a fast. Tell your concerns, and ask for help. There are plenty of docs, nowadays, who actually have training about fasting. But you will need to research to find someone. And read books. I found Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s book about fasting good, and Dr. Jason Fung. I have never heard of anyone damaging their kidneys, but let us be sensible. Drink at least 30ml of water/kg.of body weight, which is what Dr. Batmanghelidj suggested in his books. He dedicated his life to researching water for it’s help in healing diseases. During a fast, I up that amount by at least 500 ml.
  2. The choice of what kind of water is not, in my opinion, not as important as just drinking it. I personally have a Berkey Filter, some people drink distilled water, others drink reverse osmosis. And others drink sparkling water. I like to also drink sparkling water, as a treat, like a desert, while fasting. I live in Germany and use Gerolsteiner Brand of sparkling water, because it got good reviews on tests. If I lived in the U.S., I personally would look to filtering out the fluoride and chlorine, that is in most drinking water.
  3. See my comments on Nr.1.
  4. I like to include nice teas, when I fast, as a desert. This is your fast, and you follow your rules. As long as it contains no calories, the body is in “fat burning” mode.
  5. Through experience, I add salt, potassium and magnesium to water (I learned this by researching the work of Cole Robinson.) And I found, adding them to my water, helps me. In addition, I add baking soda (good for the kidneys), too. I, personally, put in 1/4 teaspoon of himalayan salt, 1/4 teaspoon of Magnesium sulphate, 1/2 teaspoon Potassium Chloride, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (NOT baking powder! Baking soda is bicarbonate of soda) and 5 drops of nascent Iodine in 1 liter of water. I got it all from Amazon. If I can not sleep at night, I take, Magnesium L-Threonate 1500mg (capsule) one hour before sleep.
  6. I have suffered from hypoglycemia when first fasting and learned to start my fast when I do not have appointments or work commitments. Maybe start on a Friday? And hang on the couch, until the symptoms go away, usually for me, on the 3rd day.
  7. You are young and personally, I would not worry about loose skin. It will eventually get better. I will have loose skin, too, but the difference is, I am over 60 years of age, and man, I do not look forward to having a frog-neck, which will probably happen, as my face gets smaller (I need to release 60 lbs.). I heard that if one follows a keto diet after the fast, that the loose skin does get less and quicker. My goals are to get healthier, and so, if the price my little ego has to pay, is having a turkey/frog neck, so be it.
  8. See my answer to your question 2.
  9. I think that is up to the individual.
  10. If you are urinating once an hour, and the urine is not too yellow, you are drinking enough.

11, Watch how often you have to urinate. If it is every 15 minutes cut back on your water. If your urine is too dark, increase your water. If your urine is seriously pale and you are urinating like 5 times in an hour, cut back on drinking.
12. Hmm, maybe get checked by a knowledgeable doc, and do bloodwork before the fast, and get blood checked during the fast, and afterwards. IF any weird symptoms occur during the fast, go see your doc.
13. I have not suffered from hypoglycemic attacks after the 3rd day of fasting, so I have no experience with that. If you do, go see the doc of your choice, who has fasting knowledge.
And lastly, READ a lot about fasting and how to break a longer fast (longer than 3 days). That is important. Some people have done themselves harm by breaking a long fast, by eating some fast food meal. Remember, the stomach IS smaller, and the digestive tract has been sleeping, so to speak. SLOWLY start with introducing foods. You can get this info on the web. Many start with bone broth, and work up to easy to digest foods. I hope this helps you and I wish you success in achieving your goals.

Thanks for the info. We get the occasional newbie looking to cure their Hashimoto’s with water fasting.

Unfortunately, can’t help as that’s not been in my personal experience and the endocrinologist I consult with weekly at the University of Southern California Medical School doesn’t have much more knowledge.

Thanks mate it’s means a lot, To help someone out the way you did, I hope someday I’ll be able to do so as well, I am a doctor myself, I didn’t start practicing yet and water fasting is all new to me

Glad Mia was able to help you. I’m so glad a new doctor is entering the field armed with this information.

My own primary physician is still operating under the “Eat Less Exercise More” approach to metabolic health. I’m lucky that the endocrinologist I’m consulting with is interested in how fasting can help his specialized clientele of T2 diabetics and cancer patients. In exchange for information from my personal experience he answers my medical questions.

BTW, I suggest you read the Dec 26 2019 NEJM fasting overview article to find what the latest research is. It was just updated February 2nd of this year.

You will make a GREAT doctor, and you can be very proud of yourself, for making this leap! I promise, you will help sooo many people. Just do not lose your heart. When I started working in high-tech hospitals, I was taught to document,(Americans sue a lot of docs!) and cover-my-ass, and do not listen to the patient, but look at the moniters. I became very business-like, cold and patients could not share their concerns with me, because I did not take their subjective “data” seriously. I realized, I better save my soul and get out! But nowadays, med school is different. They worked us to the bone, free slave labor.I started pre-med, in the U.S., back in the 1970’s and dropped out, because I realized that I could not be free, (at that time) in the U.S., and would be under the thumb of the A.M.A. I got my B.S. and now I am a Naturopath, here in Germany, where I live. I am glad you are here!!!

Oh, I forgot to say, that in the past, when I fasted, I went back to gluten, which can cause “leaky gut” syndrome in some people. There is a correlation between L.G. and auto-immune diseases…SO, this time, I will definitely be doing something new. I will be going gluten free, after this fast, and do this experiment for a year, in addition to Keto (I have been “addicted” to carbs, sigh). And maybe between fasting and these diet modalities, I can kick Hashi to the curb!

@techyrock I also recommend you work your way up to fasting. You need to build up your “fasting muscle”. :muscle: You can start by first of all cutting out snacks, then have breakfast an hour later and then cut down to two meals a day, etc.

Also make your life easier and go ahead and cut out the alcohol, sugar, and grains first, because that will be tempting when you are fasting.

If you haven’t ready done so, read Dr. Jason Fung’s The Obesity Code.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot for all your help honestly it means a lot

Thanks, honestly I am not eating snacks although I am a sucker for Fast food but been a while and I am already on two meals a day but yes I do need to make diet choices besides do you mean I should make my up from intermittent fasting to water fasting?

Thank you everyone :heart::heart::heart:

How much you fast is, of course, entirely your choice. Intermittent fasting prepares you for longer fasts if you choose to do them. Some people have lost a lot of weight just having one meal a day (OMAD). Again, I recommend Dr. Fung’s books.

Currently, I am only fasting every other day because I workout with heavy weights three days a week. I have done longer fasts and will resume them once it’s doable for me. :grinning:
