So it begins! 10pm Saturday, October 26th after my last bite of food.
I’m feeling pretty swollen in my hands and feet (as usual). I’ll take my weight first thing tomorrow morning, I already have my measurements. I will post everything together then.
Rocky's Fasting Journal
Hey Rocky! How is it going so far?
You got this!
36 hours in and feeling pretty good. Thanks for asking! I need to update my daily fasting journal soon!
That’s awesome! We are within a few hours apart. How long are you going to fast for?
Aiming for a full 21 days! We’ll see how it goes. How long are you going for?
Starting Weight - 199.8lbs
BMI - 37.3
Chest - 42.5
Arms - 14
Waist - 42
Hips - 47
Legs - 26.5
21 Days also! My starting weight is 156. We shall see how it goes. I don’t know the rest of my stats, so I can’t share those. How are you feeling so far?
I’m still feeling pretty good. I was so busy yesterday, I didn’t even think about food. It usually hits me on day 3, tho. How are you feeling so far?
Glad you are still feeling pretty good Raquel! The initial day 1 of my fast I went the whole day then convinced myself at the end of the day that I wanted to wait and start Nov 1 and gave in to breaking my fast. At first, I was completely “happy” with my decision, but after a few hours I felt disappointed, let down by my actions, frustrated, and feeling so so sad. After that I told myself it didn’t matter, I was going to restart.
NOW, What I have decided for my fast, is that I am doing 21 days no matter what. If I fall off the wagon for any reason, I am going to dust myself off, get right back on the wagon, and finish my journey strong. I may finish my 21 days. I may be a little bumped, bruised, or scraped up at the end, but I am crossing the finish line no matter what! That will also help me get out of this pattern of sabotaging my own success. I hope you will adopt a similar mantra and do this with me!
I haven’t been sleeping well and only got about an hour of sleep the day before last and maybe 3 hours max last night. So my head has been hurting a lot which I think is due to the lack of sleep more than anything. I’ve even been taking melatonin and drinking sleepy time tea… not helping at all. So tonight I’m going to add the magnesium and see if that can help. At some point my body is going to decide to sleep!
How has your day 3 been going?
Keep reminding yourself: You are strong, you are capable. You are not alone, and you have a whole community and myself here to support you! You can do this!
That’s freaking awesome, Priscilla. I am definitely in it for the long stretch. If we fail, we fail forward, right?
I have a tough mudder coming up on Saturday, and I plan to just feel it out. If I feel like I’m going to crash, I may eat something. I’m gonna try really hard not to, tho. My end goal is to be below 175lbs. I’m excited for the both of us
I LOVE YOUR SUPPORT <3 So amazing to have people like you in our community!
Fantastic accountability post! Love this!
Agreed! If we fail, we fail forward. My goal is to fast through the 17th. No matter what, that is what I will do. If I fail, I’m not changing my goal or “restarting” I will finish and accomplish my goal so that I can prove to myself that I can finish something I start and that I can accomplish my goals. It may not be perfect, and that’s ok, but I won’t get in my own way!
I have completed 3 tough mudders. One was extremely cold (temp didn’t get above 25 degrees farenheight), one was average temperature and nice, and the third was extremely hot, it was in the 100s and they were literally running out of water on the course. I don’t know how your group is (assuming you are running with a group - the one I did in the cold I ran solo, the moderate temp one, we had a group of 12 and the extreme hot was a group of 5 of us)… our group motto was just about finishing together and getting everyone through it… if someone felt they needed to go around an obstacle we tried to encourage them but didn’t shame them, we supported them. Also, we knew we weren’t running it to win anything, so we also committed to going as fast as the slowest person… that means we walked some as a group and we were completely ok with it.
In my experience running these, along with other obstacle runs and having done a 200 mile 3 day relay with a group of 12, here is what I’d highly recommend: If you want to stay on your fast, you can do that successfully and be ok as long as you are properly hydrated. Your hydration starts NOW, today. It is less about drinking water the day of and more about drinking water leading up to the event. If you aren’t taking potassium, take it. I’d also recommend doubling the amount of potassium today through Saturday night to help your muscles. Also one of the most important… SODIUM SODIUM SODIUM. Seriously. Have extra sea salt between now and then… don’t even worry if your water weight goes up over the next few days (it will be gone after the race). I assume you’ve been still working out, I’d stick with your regular workouts between now and Saturday to keep your body on track, but don’t over do it.
Also, if you have a running belt you can put under your shirt… I’m talking about the band with the expandable pocket, not the one you carry water on, during your race, pack mustard packets, several, for yourself or others. Why mustard? The sodium. So if someone - including yourself ends up getting held up from cramping, eat the mustard out of a couple of packets. the sodium in it, along with other stuff, will literally help cramps go away quickly. Then walk a bit till they go away, and then when the person feels capable, get back to your light jog. I can’t take credit for coming up with this. On the last tough mudder, one of our biggest guys went down with leg cramps, and someone came to the rescue with mustard. He was down for about 5 min (we were rubbing his leg muscles) - he was in so much pain and everytime he tried to flex or stand his leg muscles it was just as bad… then someone passed by, stopped, and gave us some mustard packets… he consumed them, and about five min later, cramps were light enough he could walk… after about 5 min of walking, he was back to jogging. It’s a miracle pouch. I’d say you could do salt packets, but with the water on the course and rolling around and low crawling they will rip or get wet, and be destroyed. Mustard Packets. Literally. I think you literally will be able to get through it without the food, particularly at this point since your body is already converting fat to energy. It will be doing that throughout the race. You don’t need the food for energy at that point (In my opinion).
Good luck on your tough mudder… don’t over stress it. be safe… remember your goal for the event and take your time - is your goal to finish or is your goal to be the fastest person of the day? If it’s to finish, don’t stress about how fast you are going… just enjoy the experience, laugh with others, encourage others also, and have a blast! It is one of the most amazing experiences you can have and one of the most rewarding when you cross the finish line (zapped and all - those things suck, but it is mental. seriously mental. don’t let those voltage wires scare you. It’s a ritual and one you definitely need to experience! Think of it as embracing anxiety, fears, worries, and that it’s about beating your own mental game.)
Congrats!
Dude, you saved my life! Thank you for sharing your words of wisdom. I did eat a little something yesterday , but I’m back on it today. Thank you!
Haha! Those voltage wires!
