Hello! First time posting! But first…Thank you so much for having accepted me as part of your community!
I have 2 questions…
First one is that I have only lost 1 pound in 4 days of fasting. Could that be possible? Do I have any problem?
Second is what happens if you eat nothing during the day but just some nuts at night…I guess fast is broken, but could still work as a weight loss method…am I right?
Thank you very much for answering. I am really sad today as just weighted myself and saw that only 1 pound was left.h
Not losing weight
Q1. I have only lost 1 pound in 4 days of fasting. Could that be possible? Do I have a problem?
A1. Answer in A2.
Q2. What happens if you eat nothing during the day but just some nuts at night…I guess fast is broken, but could still works as a weight loss method…am I right?
A2. A fast is broken when you have a carbohydrate (i.e. nuts) or anything with calories. This explains the lack of weight loss.
First there are 2 types of weight loss methods:
- Caloric restriction: eat less calories than what your body requires on a daily basis. Science has shown this doesn’t work. The reason is the body burns fat and lean muscle mass. Lean muscle mass is what burns calories when you are at rest or sleeping at night. By reducing LBM, you are reducing the number of calories your body burns. It’s the reason that when the NIH (National Institutes of Health) studied 14 former contestants of the Biggest Loser reality show 3 years after they left, 13 had gained their original weight or weighed more. The lone exception did not only because of gastric bypass surgery.
By only eating nuts you are using caloric restriction instead of fasting.
- Fasting is proven to preserve lean muscle mass. However, to be effective you have to drop your insulin levels to a point where ketosis (fat burning) can begin. Every time you eat anything that raises insulin levels it stops the process and resets the clock. It takes an average of 12 hours after the last bits of food leave your stomach for the upper intestine for insulin levels to drop to the point where ketosis can begin. Also by eating this stops the body from burning its glycogen (stored carbohydrates) in your liver and muscles. Until these reserves are burned off you can’t go into deep ketosis.
Hope this addresses your questions.
Wowwwww!! Thabk you so much for this detailed info! It makes sense! I read you were starting later this 21 challenge! When is your first day?
3/22. This will be my 2nd 21-day fast. You can read about my 1st 21-day in: S2E2 21-Day Water Fast Journal.
Will do! Thank you for your support
It’s better if you skip the nuts for sure, however try not to weigh in every day and trust the process!!! Could be some water weight or water retention going on at the beginning too!
You can do this!
Thank you for answering!! Just seeing a message from you already gave me some motivation!!! You are really good and you are really helping us! Thanks for being here
Hello, i’m new and trying to do a 5 days fasting but i can´t pass one day without eating at least some crackers and today i ate pickles that dont have any calories.
my question is, eating something like pickles with 0 calories breaks the ketosis?
My name is Sabrina, I am 35 and 73 kg
thanks!
Calories don’t matter. Think insulin. It may break autophagy but not ketosis. I ate like a giant bowl of popcorn (am OMAD keto) and am still like 2.4mmol
