I am on the day 8 of my water fast. Last time I did 22 days in December. This time I will try to go 28 days. I am doing fasting for health reasons. Don’t care about weight, but hope to restore my body’s immune response.
I had Covid in September. On October 4th I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Covid activated it. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease when your own immune system destroys your pancreas. Because pancreas produces insulin, Type 1 diabetics die without insulin within 2-3 months from organ failures. There is no cure.
In October also I had an abnormal CT scan of my stomach. I had been checked for H Pylori. Which was negative, did blood tests and finally an endoscopy.
Biopsy confirmed that I have another autoimmune disease possibly activated by Covid, because before Covid I had never had any problems with stomach.
This autoimmune disease called autoimmune atrophic gastritis. Considered precancerous disease. Autoimmune Atrophic Gastritis is when your own immune system kills cells, which line you stomach until it completely destroys it.
There is no cure. Doctors check if you are low on Vitamin B12 and Iron, because cells, located in the stomach lining, responsible for absorption of these Vitamins. As you might know, without these essential vitamins person cannot survive. Also doctors said I must get regular endoscopy to check how far my stomach lining is destroyed and if I developed cancer.
There is no treatment plan. I had not been offered anything to manage it, no hope whatsoever. Just watch your stomach being destroyed.
My first fast was in December. I know that Type 1 Diabetic should not be fasting. Because it is hard to guess an insulin dosage and predict your need for insulin. If you inject your regular dose and fasting will lower your blood sugar, you have a danger not to wake up in the morning, but slip into hypoglycemic coma. It is very real, so doctors not only do not recommend fasting to Type 1 Diabetics, but completely prohibit it.
I fasted in December for 22 days only because my Type 1 Diabetes is in so called “honeymoon phase”. It is when your pancreas is not completely dead, but still produces a little bit of insulin. Not enough to survive on its own, but is not completely dead. After reading A LOT about Type 1 Diabetes I came to the conclusion that my only hope is to use this window of a month or two while honeymoon phase lasts to attempt to restore pancreas, because pancreas is able to restore and rejuvenate itself if given the opportunity. My endocrinologist is very cool. She saw that I measure my blood sugar hourly, measure ketones 3 times a day, as well as blood pressure and pulse, saw that I carry glycogen pen and insulin with me and stopped injection of insulin to prevent a danger of hypoglycemia, and she said she doesn’t mind that I am doing water fast. But I guess, she still worried about me, because after I finished my fast, she called me, on Saturday, to see if I am eating again. I had never had a phone call on Saturday from a doctor, who is in such high demand, you can’t make an appointment with her, she is completely booked.
22 day water fast was not too hard.
I was able to stop insulin injections completely after the fast.
But my blood sugar was still in the 100. It was not acceptable, because blood sugar of 85 and higher leads to much higher risk of cardio vascular disease than blood sugar of 84 and lower.
Also, I just read a study, published in medical journal Cell, which shows that water fasting from 5th day and on restores immune cells and possibly will help me to deal with autoimmune diseases I’ve got because of Covid. I am sure that I have other autoimmune diseases in my body, like thyroid antibodies, they just hadn’t been discovered yet.
I am on the day 8 of water fast. My blood sugar is 70 mg/dl which is absolutely incredible for Type 1 Diabetic without insulin.
I am hopeful. I hope to do 28 days. If I will have a compication, or feel very sick, I will stop, refeed, and start over. But I really hope to push it through and do at least 28 days.
