Mika's Lockdown Fast - 30 Days

Hello  I’m Mika and I’ve started fasting today!

Two days ago, my country enforced a 4-week lockdown to try and “flatten the curve” of COVID-19 infections. This means all businesses except essential services (hospitals, pharmacies, supermarkets and petrol stations) must close, people must remain isolated in their own household and not be in contact with anyone from another household. We are allowed to go outside to exercise in our local area, but not drive anywhere else. Police and army are out on the streets enforcing this lockdown. I am working from home and I live alone, with no pets, so it’s pretty weird not being able to be with another soul for the next 4 weeks! I don’t usually mind being alone - however this much isolation might end up being too much of a good thing…?

Anyway, I decided to use this 4-week lockdown period wisely, and do a water fast. As it’s a 28-day period, I figured I might as well extend that to 30 days, to make a good number. I’ve done a 21-day water fast about 6 months ago and I am ready to step up to the next challenge! Working from home makes this a lot easier, as a couple of days during my last fast, I felt so tired and had to take sick leave because I couldn’t find the energy to ride my bike to work. That was a successful fast, and I was so happy afterwards. But over the last few months I gradually gained back the weight I lost, due to slow slippage of my eating habits. I’m so disappointed in myself for getting into a place where I dislike my body again.

My starting weight this morning is 63.7 kg, which I was actually surprised to see, as I feel heavier than that! Last time my starting weight was 66 kg, so I am starting from a slightly lighter weight this time. I hope that after this fast, I will be able to remain around 55 kg - which is the weight where I feel happy in myself. If anyone is interested to know, my height is 171 cm and I am a 24-year-old female.

I have now been fasting for 12 hours (I count my fasts as starting at 6 am on the morning of the fast, though I know some people like to count from the evening before, after eating their last food). My routine consists of drinking 2 litres of saline water per day (made from 1/2 tsp Himalayan salt, 1 tsp of potassium chloride, and 1 tsp of baking soda) and I also have green tea or fruit tea. The teas seem to help me get through the first few days when it’s mentally tough to keep going, but last time after a week I didn’t feel the need for them any more.

I’d definitely like to meet other people who are fasting or are interested or experienced! Please say hi!

Hi!

Welcome. It’s good to see another experienced faster with the group. Other than Yas, I guess I’m the one with the most experience in the forum. I created a custom treatment protocol for myself that uses a variety of fasting methods: Intermittent Fasting , OMAD, Time Restricted Eating, Alternate Day Fasting and Prolonged Water Fasting. Of the Prolonged Fasting, I’ve completed a 4, 5, 7, 21 & 40 day. I’m on Day 231 of my program and of those days I’ve fasted, in one form or another for 207 of them. Currently on Day 7 of my 2nd 21-day fast of this year.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Hi @Compdude! Thanks for commenting. I’ve been reading through some of your fasts. Congratulations that you did a 40-day fast!!! That is my ultimate goal one day! It’s now the morning of day 2 for me. I remember the first two days being the most challenging, mainly with intrusive thoughts trying to give me all the good reasons I should eat haha. Last night I woke up at 1 am and tried to talk myself into eating, but I won’t give in! I know that soon this won’t be an issue, I just have do get through it. I think this might be something like a withdrawal - maybe to sugar or to the dopamine hit from eating. Have you experienced something like this?

Yes, for the 1st couple of prolonged fasts. It’s the hormone, Ghrelin, aka The Hunger Hormone. The interesting thing about it is that it spikes during your regular meal times. The longer you get into your fast the lower the spikes become especially once you get past Day 3.

Once you’re an experienced faster it gets fainter and fainter. However, it will always be there during the 1st 3 days of every new prolonged fast.

During my current fast, the toughest part was during the 1st day when I had to catch myself when I fell into an unconscious patten of going for something to eat when I got hungry.

Right - it makes sense that it’s hormonal, because it’s weird feeling the different attitudes my “smart brain” and my “give me what I want” brain have haha! I’m not as hungry as I was for the first days on my last fast, for sure. That’s interesting to note - perhaps my body is learning how to adapt better.

Have you changed your diet since your earlier fast? Both sugar and wheat are addictive and the latter will cause the ghrelin that @Compdude mentioned to kick in. Some people also find that sweetened drinks cause sugar cravings. It may be that if your diet was free of those, your fast may be easier.

@donna originally after finishing my fast last year, I changed to low carb healthy fat, which is not keto but keeps the carbs low and so naturally you can’t have sugar or grains as they blow out the carb budget. However as the months went by I slowly slipped and started having a few of my favorite treats again… I love avocado on toast and I love ice cream too much! So that’s why I got back to the state of being unhappy with my weight again. I’m pretty sure I’m getting intrusive “eat” thoughts now because of the sugar addiction - I think it’s the dopamine I crave - I am not actually especially hungry. My brain is very clever and telling me all the good reasons why I shouldn’t fast again. The main one it’s hard to ignore is that I’ll lose all the fitness I build up in the last 6 months, especially running. I ran a 50km race a month ago and a 66km trail last weekend (to replace a race that was cancelled). And I know that when I fast, I’ll lose that training. But at the same time, I want to lose the weight! That’s the argument going on in my head now

@Mika, when you end your fast, you might look for keto or low carb substitute recipes for bread and ice cream. Some of them are really good! :grinning:

oh my goodness, good for you! it doesn’t sound like you’re overweight whatsoever though - are you water fasting that whole time?

Congrats! I just started yesterday too! I’m also relatively isolated, but staying with friends, so not completely alone, thank goodness. Wish you well! Jeena
