Hello everyone! Today is my day one

Wanted to introduce myself to the group–so happy to have found this forum!

I’ve been practicing intermittent fasting for awhile but have never done a prolonged water fast and it looks like just what I’ve been searching for so I’m excited to start this journey

Since this is is my first water fast I’m aiming for 3 days then will extend to 5 and 7 after which I’ll have 2-3 day refeed and repeat. Does this sound like a good plan or is it better to aim for a longer fast! Curious to hear what you all think!

Listen to your body. If you feel good, can do what you need to while on a fast, have a longer fast goal but break it into the smaller bits to help keep motivated! Benefits if longer fast will primarily be healing, weight loss if desired and autophagy, the fountain of youth as your body sheds old cells & builds new & healthy! The longer the fast period, the greater the autophagy effect.

For myself, I did 11 days of IF/OMAD to build up my fasting muscle before tackling prolonged fasts. I then did a 4, 5, 7 and then a 40. Since the 40 which I complete 11/30/19, I’ve completed two 21-day fasts so far this year.

My routine is fast-refeed-workout then repeat cycle.

Thank you @Tenax and @Compdude for your feedback! I’m feeling blessed to have found an encouraging group to help me in this process. I’m looking forward to all of the health benefits of this way of being.

That sounds like a good plan. How did it go?

@Antipodean it went (somewhat) well! 3 days in I did break and had one meal but after then I fasted for another 70 hours or so–I broke the fast with one meal and I’m down about 10 pounds. For my refeed I’m doing 20/4 split for meals then I’ll do another fast when I feel like it’s time for a break.

That’s great! The 3 day thing is interesting - I struggle a lot at the 3 day mark and I’m wondering if it’s a common thing?

@Antipodean–I’d be interested to hear how people are able to pass that hurdle because it seems like time stops around the 68th hour for me

Three days is the average time it takes to transition from glucose burning to ketosis. The reason is that it takes an average of 12 hours for the esophagus to process the last bit of food from your last meal. Its only when that happens do insulin levels begin to drop.

At this point the body turns to its stored carbohydrate (glycogen) in the liver and muscles for energy. It takes an average of 32 to 40 hours for the liver’s glycogen stores to be depleted whereupon the body goes after the glycogen in the muscles. Whereas its estimated that muscle glycogen stores are exhausted after 90 minutes of exercise. (I don’t know what the time is for non-exercise).

Since its easier for the body to breakdown glycogen for energy than fat, it will exhaust glycogen first before turning to fat.

This 3-day transition is difficult for a body not used to doing the transition. At first, the body will slow the metabolism down to adjust for the shutoff in calories. Typical symptoms are feeling cold, fatigue, headache, depression, etc. These symptoms can be exacerbated if the body has a refined carbohydrate/sugar addiction.

With fasting experience the body will shift from being “metabolically inflexible” to “metabolically flexible” and transition symptoms will become less severe or disappear altogether from succeeding fasts.

Thanks for the explanation @Compdude! I’m hoping my next fast that I don’t find day 3 as difficult

As @jane_fast said, thanks for the explanation, @Compdude. All the stuff I’d read online seemed to say that the transition to burning fat took much less time than that - I’ve been wondering what was wrong with me and why I still felt hungry 3-4 days in!

I was reading stuff that said fat burning happened within hours, but it looks like for some of us old fatties at least, that’s simply not true.

I’m starting another fast on Sunday night (it’s Friday morning here in New Zealand as I write this), and I’ll be sure not to quit at the 3 day mark, as I’ve done so many times before. It sounds like I was struggling through the hard stuff, then giving up right when it was about to get easier! :frowning: Just my sorta luck and skill!:crazy_face::crazy_face:

@Antipodean, how’s your fast going? I’m starting mine up on the 20th and I’d like to go until the 30th

@jane_fast - I’m cruisy. I started Sunday night and it’s Tuesday night here in New Zealand now. Had a few points at which I might have weakened but the group support really helps!

Good luck on the 20th!

Thank you! I ended up starting it early. I made fasting stickies and will be trying to journal more each day with my experience.
