S2E2 21-Day Water Fast Journal

Thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately, from previous experience, its just going to get worse since its from the acetone produced from ketosis and the toxins released from the belly fat. At its worse, I’ve puked up the liquid crap from my stomach, that was not exhaled out or peed out, to feel better but that was toward the end of my 40-day. One of the reasons I limit myself to 21-day fasts is hoping to avoid that extreme and having to brush my teeth and rinse my mouth out every 2 to 3 hours.

Arg…it’s scary the amount of bad stuff we store during our life of bad choices :frowning:
But we’re all in the better way! And i think in fact that your strategy of doing the 21 data instead is more segure.

@Compdude Great job on your fast! I’m dealing with that taste in my mouth today. :confounded: brushed my teeth again. I’m just drinking more water.

Day 12:
Most challenging day. Keto flu symptom reappeared in clogged sinuses early this morning along with Keto breath woke me up at 3am. Couldn’t go to sleep so spent an hour on research for the book until a wave of exhaustion hit me. Went back to bed and slept for 4 hours.

Immediately went on my 2 mile walk. I was bundled up as I’ve been feeling cold from the blood flow being redirected to my adipose cells to use them for energy. By the time I got to WalMart, the halfway mark I was exhausted. Luckily they have benches for customers. Sat for 10 minutes just recovering and even had to lay down for a bit. The good news is I registered my lowest blood pressure yet on their b.p. And weight measuring machine. Stopped in the men’s room and stripped off my lower thermals, sweat pants, gloves and North Face jacket down to my shorts, Nike undershirt and North Face athletic shirt. On the way home, paced myself and enjoyed the rejuvenating effects of the Southern California sun. Got home in good shape.

My BGL popped back up to 52 today. So I’m not going to worry anymore about it as it seems to have settled in the low 50s and high 40s.

Congrats everyone on completing Day 13!

Day 13:
One of things that surprised me yesterday was how quickly I recovered from yesterday’s 2 mile walk. Guess all the hard work on my body is paying off. Got a lot done on the book and my contestant’s speech for the Toastmasters World Championship tournament later this month. Even got a lot done on 2 YouTube music playlists I’m working from 2 shows I loved from the late 90s and early 2000s, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Keto breath was really becoming an issue and solved it with a cup of black coffee yesterday. Still having some clogged up sinuses last night but then they cleared up all of a sudden. Also what’s interesting is I’m having joint stiffness in my fingers during this fast. Didn’t experience that on my last fast instead it happening with my feet.

Exercise Plan:
:white_check_mark: 1/21 - 2 mile walk
:white_check_mark: 1/22 - 1 mile walk & LB Flexibility workout
:white_check_mark: 1/23 - 2 mile walk

:white_check_mark: 2/1 - 2 mile walk
:white_check_mark: 2/2 - 1.3 mile walk @ LB Flexibility workout
2/3 - Long walk

We’re staying on the science binge for 1 more day. Today’s topic is on the subject of apoptosis. Apoptosis is a process where a cell kills itself when its damaged whereas autophagy is where a damaged cell will recycle damaged and dead components within itself to heal.

This is the primary reason I did the 40-day and will do a minimum 7-day fast is for the replacement of dead cells with new ones in my body. I also credit this for allowing me to be cured of almost all my metabolic diseases such as T2 diabetes and hypertension in short period of time last year.

Keep it up folks! See you tomorrow!

Hi Compdude, thank you for your everyday journal it has been of great motivation for me. I red your 40 days water fasting and it is hilarious how you did battle the Keto Breath. I love your sincerity and your way of writing. Not, everybody mention this.

I thought maybe you would like to read this book about water fasting. I am reading it right now to motivate me to do a water fast.

Congrats everyone on completing Day 14!

Day 14:
6:12am marks the end of each fasting day as I want to start my ReFeed as early in my day as possible. Yesterday, I thought I’d get a jump on my journaling by doing the day’s entry as I set out to walk to my church 1.3 miles away. But then I found out my sister, who drives my mom to church and who I hitch a ride home with, got called to work early leaving me stranded. Now I faced the fact that the walk back would double my mileage to 2.6 miles.

Then I had the :high_brightness: idea of adding a side trip to Staples to pick up a new notebook for my writing, stop at the bank to make a deposit and finally WalMart to check B.P. And my weight. That side jaunt added another 1.7 miles to the walk totaling 4.3 miles which would be my longest walk EVER since before I got sick in 2010. Seemed like a good idea at the time, at least until 1.3 miles to go when a wave of tiredness hit me. Then it became a mental challenge. Slowed the pace, shortened the stride and every 2 traffic stops took a break. Wasn’t as bad as that hell walk I went through on Day 40 of the 40 day, because I’m in more in shape, but it was still tough due to the nasty detox effects of 2 days ago. Anyway its the reason I took a rest day and the fact that on Day 18 I’m considering another long walk to my Opthamologist and on Day 21/Day 1 of my ReFeed another long walk to a Toastmasters Officers training. We’ll see, I may just bail and take the bus!

Hi Compdude,

I have a awkard question. How do you keep going to church, work and interact with other people while fasting? Isn’t keto breath a concern for you while being around people? That is keeping me from fasting. I did a 8,5 day water fast but I couldn’t deal with the Keto breath and the taste. Maybe you can give me a push.

In regards to work, I work from home so that takes of that issue. LOL

With church, I get a cup of black coffee where they offer it for free to the congregation before service starts so that takes care of that.

I’m an introvert, so you I don’t go out. Also all my friends know how important that completing my book and getting it out so I can help other people become medication free is to me, so for now I communicate with them through texts and FB.

If you’re looking for a push, look inside and ask yourself if you have a strong enough “why”. For me when I was still a T2 diabetic it was either this or get on the dialysis machine or get a food amputated due to diabetes. I already had survived a diabetic induced heart attack and had diabetic induced cataract surgery in my right eye.

Thanks for your reply, Compdude. Yes, I really have a strong “why”. I want to detox my body and bring things in balance. And of course for spiritual reason. It seems that I most suffer this shameful moment to achieve my goal. I will try tea in the morning to see if it will help. I will aim for at least 21 or 28 days. And if the Lord ask me for more day I will keep pushing forward. There is no other way around. Thank you very much for your journals it’s really helpful.

Congrats everyone on completing Day 15!

Day 15:
In the HARD part of the fast now. On top of that, still paying the price for that long walk. Took several inadvertent naps yesterday. As a result my sleep cycle was screwed up and only slept 3 hours last night. Was hoping to take a 1 mile walk this morning at a minimum. Feet said, “uh uh, honey. NO!” Feet were too stiff and sore to do that. LOL, I can’t even take my own advice that I’ve been giving out liberally to everyone else to not overdo it on the exercise while fasting. Curse of being a Type A, always pushing my own boundaries.

Yesterday, the day I was dreading arrived. Keto breath morphed into what I call Keto Breath Horror. Yet, I appear to have found a weapon to keep it at bay, a cup of black coffee. Didn’t want to resort to mouth wash as the last time I used it during my last fast, it made refeed difficult as my own saliva became distasteful to me when I began eating again. In desperation I made a cup of joe while all I wanted to do was puke. To my amazement it actually worked! That puking feeling didn’t rear its head again until this morning when I was able to it drive away with another steaming cup which sits next to my iPad while I type this entry.

With a roadmap in place with a draft TOC (Table of Contents) I had no more excuses to procrastinate in sitting down and begin writing the book. Best advice I got from watching YouTube on writing tips was set a daily minimum of writing two shitty pages. By doing so you’ll have a first draft in a little over four months. It avoids putting pressure on yourself. Of course once I started I produced 4 pages but you get the point.

Today’s inspirational video is of Sylvester Stallone talking of the sacrifices he made in holding out against the movie studio in the making of the movie Rocky to make sure he was cast in the lead role. One of the sacrifices he made was of one of his most precious possessions:

So what are you willing to sacrifice to achieve your goal?

For me, when I began my journey to become medication free and to give hope to those who had resigned themselves to an apparent diabetes doom I made sacrifices. According to the CDC (Centers of Disease Control) the United States has approximately 30.2 million adults with diabetes, around 9.6% of the total population. A majority of them being in low-income minority communities. To be a credible voice to these communities, I reduced my clientele to a single client and as a result I qualified for food stamps which dictates my monthly food budget. Therefore, when I go out there offering a possible solution I can confidently say that its available to anyone no matter what their financial situation is. That’s how much I believe in what I’m doing.

Day 16:
My energy finally recovered late last night to where it was before Sunday’s walk. Yet, knowing I was digging into decades old fat now meant a lot of that energy would be used by the body in processing all these old toxins. As a result I made the decision to cut back on all my exercise routines beginning today. Before I would do a short walk and a flexibility workout. Nope. Only did the 1 mile walk and it was good I did so as I REALLY struggled. I took 6 breaks which I haven’t done since the final days of the 40-day fast. One complicating factor was my left ankle was really stiff in setting out. I began walking like Frankenstein, then like a zombie finally evolving into drunken one-legged pirate stagger. LOL

Yesterday, was also tough in getting my minimum pages out for the book. Had to review research and make decisions on what to include in the main body and what will go in the reference section. Knew this would be a constant balancing issue as I write which is giving enough information while not boring the reader.

Finally, worked out the transitions between the different scenes in my speech. Approaching more like performing a one-man play and is the reason I’m working on blocking. In other words, as I physically move from one area of where I’m speaking to another making sure I never turn my back to the audience while I’m turning.

I have overcome drug addiction (not referring to marijuana), obesity, and people pleasing. I believe overcoming these obstacles has led me to a life I am loving. The other night as I was jogging in my neighborhood, I thought, wow, I’m 35 and jogging. My dear mom at 35 was over 300 pounds. As the years went on, the pounds went up where she couldn’t even do something as simple as walk into the bank and make deposits, I would have to do it for her. Buuuttt, bless her heart, she has made a turn for the better since the Camp Fire, she is in the 180’s believe it or not and her blood pressure has been within normal levels. I believed that if I could just overcome obesity that I could blaze the path for the rest of my family. It seems to be working :blush:

Day 17:
Felt better today. On the .6 mile walk to Toastmasters I didn’t have to take a single break. My new contestant speech went over well. Got valuable feedback to make it better. Will be allowed to perform it once more at the club for more feedback before the first round of the World Championship which is at the end of this month.

Got a friend to drop me off at WalMart to pick up 4 more cans of Vegetable and Beef soup and a jar of Better than Bouillion Beef Base for when I can start making my own homemade Vegetable & Beef when I pick up groceries at Costco next Wednesday. Then hiked the 1 mile home with the backpack loaded with the groceries I picked up. Again didn’t have to rest at all.

On a completely different note, while I was cleaning out old stuff out of my work desk I can across my old pooka shell necklace from my windsurfing days. I had put it in this string bag because my neck got too big to wear it anymore. So I tried it on and lo and behold it fit again! So happy about that as it’s a reminder of my carefree days when I used to travel up and down the West Coast on weekends competing in windsurfing contests from San Francisco Bay down to Baja California.

Day 18:
It’s a real STRUGGLE right now as the toxins released from the decades old belly fat is really sapping my strength. After my walk yesterday and doing all my journal entries here, personal FB and the FB group I decided to lay down for a couple of hours. Four hours later I forced myself up to do my REQUIRED minimum of 2 pages for the book. It was hard to maintain my focus as all my body wanted to do was go back to bed. Thank goodness I did the majority of my client work earlier in the week so all I had to do was answers some client questions via email and I was done. Going through this makes me wonder how in the hell did I ever do the 40-day. I must’ve been certifiably clinically insane! LOL

When facing adversity I’m lucky I have a track record of overcoming similar bouts of adversity to lean on and remind myself of why in the hell I’m putting myself through this.

Me after learning that I had just received my first national ranking from USBA (United States Boardsailing Association) now US Windsurfing. This was after a year of frustration where no matter how many hours of practice I could never win first place in a competition. Then I realized I was focusing on the wrong thing. Instead of focusing on winning, I changed my goal to learning one new thing with every contest. This way no matter the result I walked away a winner. Having a short term goal every time I competed allowed me to build my road to success brick by brick.

Your post reminds me of something my best friend would tell me; life gives you two things: success and lessons. Hearing that truly changed my perspective. In my past I would sometimes feel as though I was being punished. But reall those circumstances were just lessons. Day 19: BAD News and an Opportunity
Legacy of my T2 diabetes and Hypertension. I was informed by the Opthamologist to consider cataract surgery on my remaining good eye, the left one. However, he said we could have another conversation after I finish my current treatment protocol to see if I can cure my condition. I looked into it. The only thing I could find is anecdotal evidence of people curing their cataracts through I.F. And none through prolonged fasting. From what I can tell, fasting works for some people in this regard and doesn’t for others. I go to see the Opthamoligist again in March to laser off film off the cataract lens in my right eye and we’ll talk about setting up that next exam. I’m looking at June 8 as that will be 2 weeks into my ReFeed after my final 21 day fast and 4 days before I see my primary physician which is the official end of the program. Hoping this upcoming ReFeed and the next 2 will cure my condition. Here’s the project plan I designed working backward from my next doctor’s appointment for those who haven’t seen it yet:

On a positive note, I’m now at 186lbs. It’s a a BIG milestone for me as its the weight I was at when I graduated from UCLA.

Finally, feeling low energy today. 2nd day in a row I’ve felt nauseous from the detoxing of the belly fat. Only slept 3 hours last night because after coming home late from the Opthamoligist appointment fell asleep for 2 hours which screwed up my sleep schedule. With only 2 days to go to finish decided to rest today.
